After graduation, Grant was assigned as a quartermaster of an Infantry Regiment. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Grant was posted as a Captain in an Ohio Regiment. In recognition of his great victories at Vicksburg and Missionary Ridge, President Lincoln promoted him to Lieutenant General of all the Union Armies on 9 March 1864.
