Valiant Miniature Kit# 9786 - Desert Rats Grenade Thrower, WWII. The fluid warfare in the Western Desert in 1941-42 saw some of the fiercest fighting of WW II. The skill and daring of Rommel's famous Afrika Korps were set off against the courage and tenacity of the British "Tommy". In the beginning British tanks and tank tactics were no match for the crack Panzers of the Afrika Korps, and they suffered a long string of frustrating defeats before they developed to a point where they could meet the Germans on equal terms. In the meantime it was the "poor bloody infantry" who had to bear the brunt of the fighting. Against seemingly hopeless odds they dug in around the port of Tobruk, where, in the course of a bitterly contested siege, the legend of the "Desert Rats" was born. The Germans were eventually forced to retreat from Tobruk, but the desert war would continue in its see-saw fashion, favoring first one side and then the other, for ten long months before the Afrika Korps was finally broken at El Alamein.
