As the Boxer Rebellion spread across China, the foreign ministers realizing that little was being done to restrain them, called upon their respective governments for sailors and marines as a protective measure. The first detachment arrived on May 31st, 1900. It included 78 British, 50 Italians, 75 Russians, 25 Austrians, 25 French, 25 Japanese, and 50 U.S. Marines.
